A little bit of something…and everything else

I’m trying to do it; trying to get by without a car. I put it on the market a few weeks ago, and haven’t had any calls on it yet…except a dealer. This is a tough venture. I notice when I drive, I realize that I usually don’t need to drive. I hate getting stuck in traffic. I hate avoiding the speed traps, even though I don’t really like to speed. I also hate having to continually pay for the damned thing! Between car payment, insurance, gas and maintenance, I put a lot of money into that thing… and for what? If I were to sell it after it was all paid off, I would maybe get enough to purchase a good computer.

This weekend I tried to ride the bus for work. It wasn’t difficult, just somewhat annoying having to wait for it. Saturday night I actually missed the bus by 5 minutes and ended up riding home. It wasn’t bad, and won’t be bad when it warms up more.

Even driving today, I noticed how much easier it would be to ride the bus/my bike. Instead of spending 10 minutes cleaning the snow off the car and warming up the engine, I could have walked to the bus stop. In the spring and summer, I could easily ride my bike the 10 miles to/from work or around town. I even used my gift cards to buy a rack and two baskets for the bike to cart groceries and other things (as well as deflect the mud from flapping up my back and bottom).

Ultimately, I’m scared. I’m hopeful that things will go well without a car, and that I can purchase a scooter for longer trips. First I need to sell the car though. Wish me luck.
